Recently there has been a mild trend in horror called Meta-Horror, which means that the horror film knows it’s a horror film and treats itself as such. Noticeable mentions are Scream, Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and the incredible Joss Whedon success Cabin in the Woods. Coming this October there is a new film to put on that list called Final Girl. Although the previous films play with the idea of “The Final Girl”, the term itself came from a book by Carol Clover; Men, Women and Chain Saws, in which it takes a deeper look at gender roles in horror movies.
For those unaware; According to Clover, The Final Girl is the last remaining character in a horror film, who is typically female. She is the one who outlasts all her friends who are murdered by the killers and sometimes will even fight back. This girl “looks death in the face and lives to tell the story”.
Final Girl is directed by first time director Tyler Shields and written by Adam Prince. The film stars Abigail Breslin (Zombieland, Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games, and Logan Huffman (Complicity).
Official Synopsis:
A man teaches a young woman how to become a complete weapon. Later she is approached by a group of sadistic teens who kill blonde women for unknown reasons. The hunting season begins.
